AS MEDIA RADIO PROJECT PROGRESS [TERM 2]

Week 1 Oct 3-7 2022

*BRIEF*

My team consisting of 4, Rania, Sharon, Sera, and myself included made a survey to collect the demographics and psychographics of our audience. Our main goal/purpose is to set up a radio channel that focuses on school scandals while having pop music as our main genre since we think it has the widest audience in the school spectrum. We planned on having all of us take part in being the speaker. We learned about positive and negative representations in the media.

 Week 2 - Oct 10-14 2022

After learning about how jumpcuts are used in filming, we made a video to further understand it. My work is inspired by a trend on Instagram. We are then done with collecting data from the survey and decided our radio name would be Pop Heart FM, except we're not allowed to so we're going to change that soon.

We found out that from 25 people, 60% of the people in our survey listens to radio. 64% of people who participated in the survey are males, 32% females, while 4% prefer not to say. The most picked music genre is RnB (15), rock in second place (12) , and pop culture and K-pop tying in third place (11). In the end, we chose RnB, pop and K-pop music for our radio.

Week 3 - Oct 17-21 2022

In this week, we began working on the script as well as planning for the timeline while thinking of names for our radio. Since our audience is mostly students on the way to school, the radio will be a morning show. The survey participants increased to 35 people, with rock music scoring top (20), RnB in second place (19), and Pop in third place (15). Rania started on recording her script, and I think she did well

Week 4 - Oct 24-28 2022

This time, Rania and Sharon are trying out the radio room, meanwhile Sera is reviving the radio jingle and I am refining the script that Rania made by specifying what songs will be put. I continued with writing an advert for one of the food stalls in our canteen, which is known as the orange stall but its original name, M23.

  • Advert: “Man, I’m hungry!” “Ooh, have you tried M23, the orange stall? The one with curry rice, rawon soup and free kacang ijo every Friday?” “Wow- that’s a bunch! And no, I haven’t tried it yet.” “Let’s go then!” M23, the best and most visited stall nowadays in Regents cafeteria, now with bakso (meatballs) available!

Week 5 - Oct 31-Nov 4 2022

We were introduced about the basic apparatus for our radio project; a USB-plug microphone, an audio mixer and audio interface + mixer. We are changing the name once again, "All Star"

Here are my research references that I chose out of personal preference. Judging from other radio logos, they are very generic and not eye-catching even though they used bright colors. They are mostly round in parallel and stoic fonts.

I find these black and white logos to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Not only are they simple and cleanly designed, they are also quite literal with the message being visually delivered.

Logo Development + Final

These two sketches are all part works of Ilona, Rania and Sera all done on two separate papers. The paper on the left shows the trial and error of fonts, designs, placements and concepts. The paper on the right shows the development, which is relevantly coming towards the final. They have mentioned how they wanted to focus on making the logo generally in a star-shaped form. Next, Ilona had done a development by adding a line, surrounding the star in the "All" to give an implication of "going all places in every corner". They initially wanted only images or "messy" concepts, but they ended up with a more eye-pleasing composition that is more aesthetic and soft; started off abstractly at first. To add, another development they did was transitioning from sharp shapes to rounded fonts.

The app used to create this final "All Star" logo is Medibang Paint, with a duration of approximately 30 minutes, more or less. Although, there were some struggles, it took a while to make the shape of the star. However, the details were erased to make it seem like the font. We can see how the "All" is placed on the line (the "ring") surrounding the word "Star" shaped in particular to a star form. The typography of "All" and "Star" are relevantly different, where "All" has a block-shaped font in white with black borders, whereas "Star" has a swirl-like font, following the shape of a star in black. There is a "ring"-like form that surrounds the star, this gives a similarity to the planet Saturn - having a ring around its body. The spectacular details done include how the ring is white when it crosses the word "Star", showing more of its form. Additionally, with simplicity, which represents most of us and the audience in the present time, I only applied the colors black and white. The logo also gives off and/or represents our main genre on the radio show, that being pop music, a hint of K-Pop and western culture for our news segment. Moreover, Hollywood is the heart and core of pop music and they are typically represented by the stars (actors, actresses, singers, pop-stars), also representing our target audience (teenagers, young adults to adults) as they have a significantly huge interest in pop-stars and/or actors they watch in movies.

Week 8 - 21-25 Nov 2022

Editing the Jingle

"BandLab" is the app used by Sera to produce the jingle.

The steps:
  • Recording the radio show's name (All Star) and tag (comin' through your life) with her laptop and headset to improve the quality of the sound
  • Adding after-effects to the tag to have effects of reverb and echo
  • Applying 'sampler' for the jingle's rhythm and melody
In addition to that, her struggles faced were finding the correct sound in order to make the jingle an adequate sound to the audience. Another one was composing the melody and rhythm, finding the most desired rhythm for the opening, such as for the rhythm being energetic and upbeat to fit into our concept of being dynamic and lively. However, these struggles were overcome.

Editing the Show

"Audacity" is the editing app I used to compile and edit all our individual recordings.

The steps:
  • Putting the recording clips in order
  • Cut out unnecessary bits, such as dead airs in our individual recordings
  • Converting the songs from YouTube to WAV format
  • Settle the songs in the order in Audacity based on our breakdown
  • Insert fade-out transitions to make the audio smoother

Nonetheless, the struggles faced are converting the audio as Audacity, the app, requires it to be in FFmpeg form, but after hours of researching, it turns out a WAV format is supported. Secondly, splitting the audio took a while to get it all figured out, even so, it was easy once it has been found out.

"BandLab" is the app utilised by Sera to insert and edit the additional parts of the radio show (such as the weather forecast recording)

The steps:
  • Retrieving and inputting the additional recordings from Google Drive to BandLab
  • Finding the parts of the recording with uneven volume
  • Resizing

Two struggles occurred to happen, that being the uneven volume must be resized, and knowing the placement of the back sound in and out.
